GAIA tool

Post by Grauw »

I’m working on a little tool that talks to the GAIA, and released a first version:

“Roland has made available a MIDI implementation document for the GAIA, also documenting a protocol to access its internal memory. So what I did is I started working on a little tool that can talk to the GAIA. Right now it’s pretty bare-bones, but already it exposes some very interesting information. For example, I was able to extract a list of preset patch names — should come in handy!

There are currently two menus to issue commands and a log to show results. The first menu lets you play some test notes and send GM on/off control messages (looks like they just reset the GM though). The second menu is more interesting, it allows you to dump the system settings, as well as the settings of the currently selected patch (including edits). So now you can retrieve the exact patch settings, share them, reposition the controls, whatever!

Some plans for the future are to show the parameters in a little more visually appealing and structured way, and to eventually allow you to edit the parameters. I also want to add the ability to set the tempo to a specific BPM. An editor for arpeggios is also on the wish-list, and also there’s a bunch of reserved memory locations that may have something good lurking in them.”

Hey,

I just released a new version. You can now select the parameters to view in a more convenient manner. Also it now has the ability to view all user patch settings. Get it from the project page:

Hi,

Love the tool. Keep up the excellent work.

I think I found one bug though...where you list Master Level, it shows the same number as the program number.

Looking forward to more developments from you!

Thanks for helping out the community!

Hey m0rfious,

Thanks for your feedback. You’re right, that’s a little bug! I should spend some time on writing tests for the processing of parameters to confirm that it returns the right values. I skipped that to save some time, but it always comes back to bite you :).

Hey m0rfious, I released a new version 0.0.4 which fixes that bug, along with two other similar ones. It should now show all values correctly, but let me know if you find another issue!

I just released version 0.1.0 of my GAIA tool — it is now possible to edit arpeggios! In tracker-style :). That’s a first for the GAIA!

Absolutely brilliant!! Being able to see how the tones are made up is great news, but for me having an arpeggio editor for the Gaia is fantastic. One thing I have noticed is that the tool tips don't always display when you run mouse over arpeggiator settings, or when they do display only stay up for a short time. But that is just a minor niggle for an interface as intuitive as this one. Many thanks for a brilliant tool.
