I don't understand why you're making these comparisons. I don't see the point...
If you ask me, I'll honestly say that none of those compare to a good hi-quality VA (Virus for ex) or software VA.

The good thing about the Gaia is in it's sliders, knobs and easy editing. It lacks assignable controls (you can't modulate filter cutoff for example) but it is a GOOD synth for learning things. The other good thing is the poliphony... you can make huge pad sounds without cutoff.

I don't really like the user interface in Ultranova, it misses a lot of sliders and knobs, but it sounds great. I'm not sure, but it sounds a little better than Gaia.

I'm mostly interested in having a wavetable synth, so I've been looking at the Ultranova recently too. It does sound pretty good on youtube; but take that with a grain of salt.

I think I love the mod routing. The touchy knobs I'm not so convinced.

I have to agree about the Gaia; the sliders and in your face editing will be quite helpful if you're new to making your own sounds. Comparitively, the Ultranova's LCD lacks. They are like opposites in this regard.

Must also say, I don't see much of a point here either. Apart from price points, the approaches these two boards take are just too different to make a valid comparison.

The UltraNova is an excellent synth - there is no question about that. Editing on the UltraNova is not as straight forward as the Gaia clearly, as it is all done through menus, but neither is it a massive chore either. The sound quality is top drawer from the Nova, and in truth, possibly slightly better than the Gaia. One way that the Nova blasts the Gaia out of the water is in the software which ships with it. You get a plug-in and librarian out of the box (or free download from the Novation website) and the software plugin is absolutely excellent - one of the best I've seen to link software and hardware. Although I haven't been keeping up with current events, it seems that the Gaia Editor is still not fully available (and with a £90 price tag last time I looked is not really something I want to get into).

Having said all that - I am on a studio purge at the moment and am getting rid of some of my equipment. I have no hesitancy at all in getting rid of my UltraNova, but my Gaia is staying put. Really down to the simplicity of it, and the ease of creating / tweaking new sounds. Although the Nova is good, it just isn't (to me anyway) as inspiring as the Gaia - and that is what is important to me.

Roland’s editor may cost an arm and a leg, but the Gaia tool is free :). It probably doesn’t compare to the Nova software, but it adds some things you can’t do from the Gaia’s front panel. It has arpeggio editing and also a library function.

can gaia get such fat sound out?

p.s.
BTW, I was considering gaia and it's really nice synth but
again very bad keybed.
