GAIA Sample based? I don't think so.

There are a number of people on various web forums who seem to be under the impression that the GAIA is just a glorified sample playback machine. This is the primary reason for criticizing it and it's been repeated enough that it seems to have taken on a legitimacy that is underserved as this "information" show up NOWHERE in any official documentation.

Also, check out what Daniel Fisher has to say over at Sweet Water. He also calls out those who have no real knowledge of the GAIA but seem to magically know how it works internally. He specifically states that the GAIA is modeling the waveforms. Take into account he deals directly with the factory techs unlike those who simply spout opinions of synths they have never used.

There have been discussions at a few years back here on Roland clan and also the same about the Jupiter-80. You may want to search the forums.

I had a Gaia but sold it (I now have the newer Jupiters which have the same basic Virtual Analog Section.) I do believe that it's waveforms are sampled. Also I recall that there is a mode you can access extra sampled tones but you cannot save them. Also with MIDI you can use the SH-01 Gaia as a sound module to play Basic Meat and Potato GS/General MIDI Sounds.
