Roland U-20

Post by Scout1978 »

Hello. I'm familiar with the Roland RD 700, 800, and 2000. Recently, I bought a Roland U-20 at a garage sale. The demo plays. But, otherwise, I can't get it to make a sound. I've performed the factory reset. It did not help. Does anyone have any suggestions, other than throwing it in the garbage? I've already thought of that. Thank you in advance.

Tip1
You should check the SETUP / MIDI / COMMON / LOCAL CONTROL parameter. If it is OFF, the U-20 keyboard is not controlling the U-20 motherboard (in this case set it to ON).

Tip 2:
If you have loaded the factory presets (so you can see the Patch and Timbre names on the display), try to use the U-20 as a sound module (drive it from its "MIDI IN" on all MIDI channels). If it produces sound this way, the U-20 keyboard is probably not communicating with the U-20 motherboard (a common error).

Tip 3:
Download the service manual:

See pages 10-20 for a description of the test mode. Start the test mode.

I have uploaded some files related to the Roland U-20 ("Roland U-20" folder):

I have very fond memories using this synth back in the day! It served me very well. It was connected to an old MC50 sequencer. Don't throw it away yet. Exit the DEMO PLAY mode, ensure it is connected/volume is up and cables are all good and hopefully it will produce what you are after.
