Instrument cable

Post by Macker62 »

Hi, I've a problem with the instrument cables that I use for my new Jupiter 80.
They plug into my amp and are pretty new, working fine with my Gaia.
I plugged them into the Jupiter and nothing!

I pulled one cable out slightly and it kinda worked, but I fear these cables are not up to the mark. Anyone have any suggestions please?

What type of cable are you using, TR (Tip/Ring=Mono) or TRS (Tip/Ring/Shield)?

Thanks for replying, I haven't a clue I've heard of neither, is there any way I can tell by looking at them?

Look at the plug. If it has a silver tip that is separated from the rest by a black ring, it is TR. If there are two black rings, then you have a TRS plug. The black rings are insulators that separate the plug into individual conductors. The TR carries a signal on the tip and the rest is shield or ground. The TRS can conduct two signals, one on the tip and one on the narrow ring, and the rest is the shield or ground.

The reason this is of interest is that the jack of an instrument is often set up to use either plug or in some cases a plug that is partially inserted with different results.

I've been using TRS with my JP 50 and never had problems. It might be time to get some new cables? Try out a few if you have more and see if it's just that cable that doesn't work, otherwise maybe your output jack is a little loose.

Cables are the first thing to die and cause problems in any studio, but if they are new and work with the Gaia my thinking is maybe the JP 80 needs an adjustment.

*gonna jump on this before the Wombat- TRS and TS are the two instrument cable types discussed. "Tip, Ring, Sleeve" for balanced and "Tip, Sleeve" for unbalanced.

Thanks for trying to help me out, after all the heartache it was found the Jupiter itself was faulty, so it was returned. A new one was sent to me and everything is working fine now.

Macker62, I believe Paulo meant to type:
GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome), it turned well for you in the end!!
I must admit that I am occasionally afflicted with GAS, too.

Please don't tell Doug.

Well... I think you're getting old Grammar, or maybe you need to change your GLASSes 0-0 ;-)
