Yeah, they made it simple for the Jupiter 80:

Entering the Test Mode:
Hold down MENU and PERC and switch on the power.

Some test are automatic, for example the device test (#2) will check the memories and others (flash sdram etc). Some other tests will ask you to listen to a sound, touch the display or press the switches. This pretty much cover just about anything that could fail.

Just a little note about the test mode: There's now way to go back to 'normal' mode from there. Once you're done with the tests you have to power off the Jupiter-80.

Here are all the tests:

Test Items
1. VERSION CHECK (p. 42)
2. DEVICE (p. 42)
3. OUTPUT (XLR) (p. 42)
4. OUTPUT (TRS) (p. 43)
5. SUB OUT (p. 43)
6. PHONES (p. 43)
7. DIGITAL OUT (p. 43)
8. MIDI THRU (p. 44)
9. MIDI IN/OUT (p. 44)
10. AUDIO IN (p. 44)
11. MUTE (p. 44)
12. LCD (p. 45)
13. TOUCH-PANEL ADJUST (p. 45)
14. TOUCH-PANEL CHECK (p. 45)
15. BEEP (p. 45)
16. SW (p. 45)
17. SW/LED (p. 46)
18. A/D (p. 46)
19. ENCODER (p. 47)
20. D BEAM ADJUST (p. 47)
21. D BEAM CHECK (p. 47)
22. PEDAL (p. 47)
23. D/A NOISE (p. 48)
24. WAVE CHECK SUM (p. 48)
25. KEYBOARD (p. 48)

Not working for me; are you sure those are the keys to hold down?

i never did this (forgot about this thread!) but just now did it and it worked.

you keep holding down PERC (under the part volume lever) and menu after the machine does its boot up and the chiclet keys all flash like knight rider.

keep holding until the screen comes on...

Thanks for the quick reply.
Still doesn't work for me. Have I got a different version? Is there a jumper on the CPU board to lock out test mode?

Both those buttons do work, and I have stood there for 30 seconds after the "power synth" screen with the first 8 voices appears, and it just isn't having it.

And I really need those tests: there is a hideous, rasping distortion on both the upper two engines, which I'm guessing is a RAM fault. Even though replacing them involves specialised infra-red soldering techniques, it is worth doing on something this expensive and this new. but if it is a voice ROM, that has to come from Roland, and I imagine they won't just email me the data and let me program my own.

Do Roland make the service manuals available to anyone, at any price?
Would an agent simply replace the whole CPU board and charge thousands of pounds for the priviledge?

I'm guessing you've reinstalled the firmware and sounds? I will try mine tonight.

nev,

do you have the latest firmware roland released for the synth?

if the registration screen comes up then the synth is not responding to the key combination.

does your perc button work properly?

i find it hard to believe anyone did something internally to disable this. perhaps you just have old firmware?

now updated.
Update ran but stuck on "checking..." so I left it for an hour. still stuck. I restarted. Works as before but with version 2.11
I think the reason it got stuck was an internal failure, probably RAM. I still can't access test mode.

Do you know what Roland's policy is for their service agents? Are they required to change whole boards, like Pioneer insist theirs do?
