Jupiter 80 partner's keyboard

Hello,

I am a glad owner of a Jupiter 80. This synth is just fantastic !
I would like to extend my gears a bit and I am hesitating between :
1) Roland FA08
2) Yamaha MOXF8

The weighted keybed is missing in my gears...

I was also considering the JD XA (forgetting then the weighted keybed of course...)

Would getting a second Roland board (FA or JD) be a good idea (same sound technology) ?

The montage would be nice, but way to expensive for me at the moment. Worth waiting to combine it with the Jupiter ?

Thank you for your ideas...

Personally, I'd save up for the Montage. It's amazing. Since you want a weighted keyboard have you played the FA and MOXF? Do you like those keyboards? The choice of a weighted action is very personal decision. The synth engine is almost irrelevant in that regard. Both have great sounds. The Montage 8 keyboard is very nice.

I use a Motif XF7 with my Jupiter. They pair nicely because I prefer the arps in the Yamaha and I can load my custom samples into flash memory. I prefer the EP sounds in the Motif. But IMO the user interface is very laggy and that can become frustrating over long sessions. This is why I'm not recommending the XF8. I have considered selling it but my Motif is white and I have an affinity for white synths. So it stays.

Good luck and let us know what you end up buying.

Hello Devnor,

Thank you for the post.

I have not tested any of both (FA08/MOXF8).

I think the best way to go is to wait to get the Montage 8. It should become possible by the end of the year, I hope...

Just need a bit of patience...

Your advice is clever and makes absolute sense...
Thanks again.

I agree! I have a JP-80, and an Integra 7 and a host of Plug ins that I use with Sonar Platinum. While at Sweetwater Gearfest, I heard a couple demos of the Montage and played with it for about an hour. Bought one on the spot.

It was delivered a couple weeks ago and I'm still reading the 500+ pages of excellent documentation. The sounds are great! The piano sound alone is amazing as far as the dynamic range and sound. The Roland stuff is great, but the Montage sets a new bar.

I Purchased the Montage 6. I don't like the weighted keyboard and it fit better in my "Play Pen"

I pair my Jupiter 80 with a Korg Kronos and the two sound perfect together as each strengthens the other's weaknesses. I also play a Kurzweil PC3 live and these three cover everything I need in a British invasion act I am in as lead vocalist and keyboardist.

It's a challenge to recreate some of the sounds - especially The Beatles. Sir George Martin really was a wizard in what he did with tape. The next Beatles song we are adding is Tomorrow Never Knows and I'm finding that the Jupiter 80 has really made the job of recreating sounds from this very trippy song a lot easier; the Jupiter is that powerful. Usually when bands and synths are being discussed, The Beatles are rarely talked about yet the sonic territory they and George Martin covered is still ahead of its time. Sorry for the tangent. ;)

But since you didn't mention Kronos then I would say get the Montage. The JD-XA is cool and while it has tons of knobs and sliders, synthesis wise IMHO the Jupiter 80 is MUCH more powerful. Additionally in my experience at least it's always nice to have the palette of another manufacturer and Yamaha, having the lion's share of the market, will cover your bread and butter sound needs while the Jupiter 80 will give you amazing complex sounds. If I didn't have a Kronos I would have definitely considered a Montage.
