New to Jupiter Questions

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if the sound sets downloadable for Jupiter-80 also work with the Jupiter-50? I have the 50 and I see a lot of sounds that appear to be downloadable for both but sometimes they only list the 80 (often on third party sites) and was unclear whether the 80 and 50 are essentially the same instrument as far as loading up extra sounds goes (with less memory/space for the 50).

Another thing I am wondering is whether it's possible for me to capture the tones/patches from my XP-10 and Juno-G and store them in the Jupiter-50. Specifically, I want

XP's Slow String, XP's "XP Heaven," and "Fantasia," along with one particular electric piano in the preset alts.

and

Juno-G's Imagination Piano setting, Aerial Choir, and a few other odds and ends from it.

Can I hook up the XP-10 and/or Juno-G to the Jupiter somehow and transfer patches? And if not, is there a place where I can acquire these specific sounds?

Thank you so much to anyone who can assist. It's pretty difficult finding answers for the questions I've had.

Sincerely,

Brian

Try it. If the Jupiter-50 can't read the Jupiter-80 file it will reject it. It is essentially the same file format, but the 50 can only load the upper live set so it will not play the lower live set. The 80 sounds thus have more layers.

You have to recreate any patches from other sources. The Jupiters can't load samples.

Thank you, this really helps. I perform a lot of Madonna covers and the Slow Strings (it may have been Slow String 2) on XP-10 was absolutely perfect for the introduction to Frozen and the Aerial Choir from Juno-G was insanely good as the introduction to Like a Prayer. Are there any patches either already on the Jupiter or available somewhere that you would recommend for such a smooth but keen sounding String section and a choir as fitting as Aerial Choir? Many thanks,

-Brian

The Jupiter has many nice strings but lacks in choirs. You probably have to try programming your own. Not many Jupiter patches out there. The Integra has more choirs and pairs nicely with the Jupiter.

Thank you again. I'll see if there are any sites out there with nice Live Sets that have good choirs. It seems like the Jupiter might have the right base tones to create a good choir but that's so far beyond my expertise.

Appreciated,

-Brian

Also, Kimsnarf, I did a search for some utilities for Jupiter and came across your librarian program. I will try to work with it throughout the week and let you know how it goes. I noticed additionally you are in Norway. Have you ever heard of the Norwegian artist Bertine Zetlitz? My friends and I listen to her very often.

Thank you for your help again! -B

The JP-80 has great VP-330 waveforms (PCMS). You would have to build sounds from the ground up, but with up to 10 layers of sounds available, with them slightly detuned plus good chorus / reverb effects you can get wonderfully lush choral sounds.

Thank you, cello. I haven't built any original sounds on the Jupiter yet as I'm not confident I have the ability to produce a patch that's as pleasing as other more dedicated patch-experts could create. I'll give it a try as a last resort. :-)

Do you know of any good sound banks out there I could download or even purchase that has some incredible choirs for JP-50?

Also, would it be helpful to load up the Aerial Choir and Imagination Piano setting (I miss it) from the Juno-G and look at exactly how they're constituted on that instrument as a guideline for recreation?

Thank you again. -Brian

The most recent version of the Jupiter-80 librarian is available in source code only on GitHub. I was working on distributing the binary more easily but was side-tracked by other projects (and silence in its demand). With Swift 3 out now (the development language) I'm planning on revising it.

Yes, I have heard of Bertine Zetlitz. :) But since I started playing with synths I almost never listen to music anymore, except some indy/amateur stuff produced on the instruments I like most. When I'm in the mood for music I play something myself instead.

It should be possible getting quite close to your favourite patches from the Juno-G. The exception is if they depend on some waveform not available on the Jupiter, or some feature the Jupiter simply does not have. But the basics of the sound should be similar.
