Roland SC88 MIDI trouble

Hiya,

I'm trying to get my SC88 to accept incoming midi but it's not happy. If I plug into Midi port A everything distorts, if I plug into port b, I get a nice clean sound but it doesn't relate to the sound displayed on the main display. Any ideas?
