D-50 Wont complete boot process

Hi... I was given a beautiful D-50 from a bandmate with the disclaimer "it's broken". When you switch on the power, the Upper Partial light illuminates and there are squares along the entire top row of the display and that is as far as it gets. I'd love to resurrect this synth. Any ideas?

I'm thinking maybe the bootloader is not activating as I cannot even get into the test screen. Anyone have any ideas?
