Under EDIT: INTRO I am trying to understand the meaning

I recently purchased a DR-880. I love learning to program it. I expect some great recordings to come from this unit. I have got a lot of the machine figured out, but there is one current problem that eludes me.
Under EDIT: INTRO I am trying to understand the meaning (or the difference) of the 'Key' & the 'Rec. Key'. The manual tells me the 'Key' is "the key when playing the pattern" & the 'Rec. Key' is the key when recording the bass".
This confuses me. I thought the only key was the bass. How can a pattern have a key? I am not very music theory educated, thus the confusion, I guess? It seems to me I would set both of them the same, but why then have the two?
If you can explain the difference between the two, 'Key' & 'Rec. Key', I am sure to get this drum monster rolling and make some pretty cool demo songs.
Thanks in advance for all the help. Jim
