BOSS DR-880 malfunction

Hi Guys

Hoping there is someone out there with some experience with a problem I am experiencing with my DR-880 drum machine.
The encoder dial has all but stopped working. This is the big dial top right with value written underneath. I believe the encoder dial is also used as a data wheel on other instruments and gizmos too. There is one on my BOSS GT-10 Multi-effects pedal board for instance, or the Roland FA-08 appears to have one.
I have seen the encoder sold on eBay as a spare part but am not sure how easy the replacement process is (soldering needed).
Has anyone had this problem and found a different fix or gone ahead and replaced the encoder?
