Replace them also.

That's what I meant: Replacing them first before the others.

Replaced C931 and C932. That cured the issue with the right output jack not working. Going to replace the remaining eight 10uF 16V caps as soon as I can get ahold of a smaller iron.

One of the pads on C90 appears to be corroded, not sure how to clean it so solder will bond to it. I may have to figure out how to jump the connection, but I'd rather not have to do that.

Damn! One of the posts on one of the caps was corroded to the point that, I think, the pad came off WITH the cap! I'm kinda lost on what to do, or where to jump the post to if that's what needs to be done. I hope that's not the case though!

Granted, I was surprisingly able to clean the crap solder and corrosion and replace the caps, all except the one with the missing contact pad.

Update: I was able to clean up and remove the corroded solder on those four caps, then replace three of them, all except the one with the missing contact pad. I'm wondering if I could expose a bit of the trace exiting the defective pad, then "draw in" a new pad with a conductive pen, very carefully and delicately mind you, and connect the new pad to the existing trace, using the pen.

Dont "draw" new pad. Simply use some super attack clue and small wires(for new trace).

Hi,

I'm about to purchase a project XP-50 which has no sound output. Can I replace the SMD caps with regular caps? I think those are easier to solder onto the mainboard.. and which caps can be replaced bij 'tantalum' caps? I read that that could improve sound quality?

I don't really know the difference between different types of capacitors but the ones I found on a local webshop seem to be the 'radial Aluminium capacitor' type. They have a wide variety of other capacitors too.

I found this list in this thread somewhere:

14 x 10uF 16V
05 x 47uF 6V
03 x 100uF 6V
02 x 330uF 6v
02 x 0.1uF 50V
01 x 4.7uF 50V

Which can/should be replaced by 'normal' caps and which by tantalum caps?

And I couldn't find any 6V caps but they sell 16V caps for the 47, 100 and 330uF caps in the list. Can I use those?

Cheers, Valentine.

Tantalum caps are superior to normal caps, so you may use all tantalum.
You may replace the SMD caps with regular caps, I did it.
16v caps can replace 6v caps, but the contrary is false. The downside is that the 16v caps are bigger.

I've looked at a few online stores but getting tantalum capacitors in 50V seems to be difficult. Most types go up to only 35V..

Do you happen to know which ones are on the audio path? Maybe I just replace those with tantalums and the rest with normal caps..

thanks!

The audio path: please look at the caps that are between the DA converter to the Output jacks.
