XV5050 versus XV5080

Post by Dalmation »

Is the XV5050 a simply slim version of the XV-5080, with the same core/internal architecture?
(albeit without the extra front panel buttons and large display)

Also - I understand the XV-5080 has some(or all?) of the waves from the JD-990.
How compatible are the XV-5050/XV-5080 with JD-990 patches?

Edit - I also understand the 5050 doesn't have the sample memory/sample playback capabilities as the 5080 does... then neither does the JD-990 ^_^

Thanks,
Dal.

The 5080 has more effects algorithms - so alas they are not identical in structure. I had hoped to acquire a 5050 to compliment my 5080 and to use the same patches, but they are not exactly the same. But if you're going for one of these for the 1st time, the 5050 is a very powerful option - other than the missing effects algorithms, it is essentially a slimmed down 5080 (and the 5080 is magnificient) and I believe with a computer editor availabel too!

Yes they both have the JD800 and JD990 waveforms on board. I also own several JD800s and a JD990, and alas the XV5080 cannot read their patches - nor does it sound the same even with the same waveforms selected, because the XV5080 filter and effects are different. The JD800 / 990 offer a wondefully silky-smooth capability for textures, atmospheres and pads but I found that trying to generate these on the XV5080 did not quite work - it's harsher, stronger - and in this you loose that silky smooth sound. I tried quite hard to get the XV5080 to reproduce some of my JD800 pads but I could not do it. So IMO it is difficult to emulate the JD800/990 on the XV5080 (though perhaps with more work on it it will work). But the XV5050 is a very, very nice module in its own right. I would recommend you try to play with one before you purchase, but it is a very strong option.
