Roland JV-1010 midi keyboard patch changes

So I've plugged a midi keyboard to the JV-1010 with a midi cable going out from the keyboard and in on the JV.

Some strange things going on here. When selecting patch it seems not possible to select a patch and then play it/hear it on the keyboard. Though selecting performance seems to yield sound, but seems to default to just one bank, and changing patch number on the JV in performance mode still has no effect on what's heard with the keyboard (which is a synth). It's only seemed possible so far to change patch with the synth's own patch and bank selectors, but again, it's all limited to just one bank on the JV, and I want to access the other banks.

The midi led blinks no matter if I hear anything or not when playing.


What is likely to have gone, or been done wrongly here? Is the unit possibly broken?
