Hi
I'm clued up on Yamaha gear but this is my first Roland Rack.
Can someone confirm the following for me please?
Rhythm set (Drums) - only user sets 1-4 can be modified.
Performance - only usr addresses can be modified.
Patch list - only usr can be modified.
If I modify any of the rhythm, performance or patch sets I can only store in usr
addresses?
Thanks
XV-5050 architecture
Re: XV-5050 architecture
Looks like it.
4 Rhythm Kits, 128 patches and 64 performances.
The general rule on Roland gear is the writable memory is called USER.
There is an XV editor and library for your computer , so you can have as many Kit, Patches or Performances as your hard disk will hold.
The Rhythm Kit Midi data isn't too big so you could use a device to send midi data between sets or at a pinch, songs. If you not using a computer live perhaps your controller could send the sysex data.
It is certainly possible to embed sysex in a song on my Motif XS (with my Fantom X also).
So you are really only in trouble if you need more that 2 user kits in a song. There you might have to think carefully about the kit.
You could set up two kits in a single Rhythm Kt by using the usually un-used notes for your second kit.
It makes for non-standard drum notes, but still useful.
There is 128 sounds in each Rhythm Kit so it should give you a lot of scope.
So that only leaves layering.
In a Rhythm kit, each note can have 8 different waves and you can velocity switch them.
A compromise, but not too shabby.
All the best

Thanks for the info. I use a MOTIF ES as well.
Have you seen the editor by John Melas?

Re: XV-5050 architecture
Hi Royce
I'm well away with this XV-5050 now. It took some time and I've made my own pdf guides.
The baritone sax is outstanding and the strings and trumpet are very good.
I was using a Yamaha daughter board which stopped talking to my
Miditemp controller. So I replaced it with the Roland.
I've got quite a good set up.
I make MIDI files with XG works.
I include sysex commands where necessary.(Easy with XG works!)
The Roland actually responds to some Yamaha commands not listed
in the Roland handbook.
I drive a Yamaha Motif ES rack, Roland XV-5050, Yamaha PSR9000 and
a sound font in the Miditemp. That's well over 3000 instruments.
I have over 400 polyphonic notes to play with. So a full orchestra sound
is well within the capacity of the set up.
The Miditemp can divide channels among eight outputs.
So I use Channel 1 for the Motif and have bass using output 3
for a separate mixer control; 2-PSR9000; 3- XV-5050;
4-PSR9000 sysex controls (e.g. Harmony)and 5 for the DMX.
The PSR9000 has vocal harmony settings which can also be controlled by
MIDI chords - so three of us sound like a very large ensemble with (solo) vocal
harmonies.
I have John Melas's editor for the Motif and Roland's editor for the XV.
I also drive a DMX light set up (Channel 16 so only 15 MIDI channels.)
You can find some results here:

Just follow the links.
No Roland material there yet - I'm busy converting.
Kind regards
