Hey!
I "resurrected" my good old JV-2080. Great Synth!
But..I have a problem.
I once composed a few songs and stored the User-Performance presets (multi instrument).
I saved years ago a MIDI- dump to my Logic 4 sequencer. The seq recorded about 1 minute sysex data.
But when I try restore it with Cubase 8 - and even with an old Logic copy - the 2080-Midi LED flashes at transfer time but nothing shows on the 2080 display. There are only the factory settings as my battery died and my user data was lost some day...
I don't know what to do to restore the old midi bulk correctly...
Has someone a clue? THX!!!
JV-2080 how to restore old midi dump correctly?
Re: JV-2080 how to restore old midi dump correctly?
Hi,
Logic? so you are a Mac user?
The most common problem is that the Device Id in the saved file is not the one currently set on the synth.
The range is 16 to 31.
You set it in the System area - press F3 for Midi (page 173 of the manual)
You can start at the default of 16 and work you way up each time trying the dump.
Is it a Midi File?
If you want to send me a PM with the file, I can have a look.
All the best

Re: JV-2080 how to restore old midi dump correctly?
Many THX for replying!
I have an very old Logic 3 or 4 dump in a LSO-File and I have an imported Midi file with Cubase 8. Both on Windows/Intel PC (sorry ;-) )
I will send you both files in a PN. Zipped.
In the meantime I will try restoring as you explained... thx.
Kind greetings from Germany!

Re: JV-2080 how to restore old midi dump correctly?
Hey, I have tried to restore dump file (MIDI import) with Cubase 8. Cubase marked the track with "SysEx data" in title. So it seems okay so far...
The 2080 shows a reaction on device id 17 (first, lowest).
And - miracle . the title if the first Perform/User preset has changed. But it seems only the first of presets.
My song name appears on the display. The instruments in performance preset don't changed from factory settings. You can store 16 instruments in this mode, as you prob. know..
But then a display msg appears three times:
"SysEx Data checksum error!" on display.
and nothing more changes are made to user presets.
Has it something to do with the imported file structure? Or with the dead battery in the JV-2080? Haven't exchanged it ever...

Re: JV-2080 how to restore old midi dump correctly?
Hi
the data in the Midi file you sent is not Roland (it has Roland header byte, but the rest of the sysex is not in Roland form).
It looks like a 'packed version' of sysex.
My guess is that it is a special version of 'Logic' sysex or perhaps Cubase.
This is probably how Logic/Cubase handles large sysex blocks.
The messages are genuine sysex (Sonar will read it) , but inside each of the sysex messages, instead of a Command message (11 or 12), there is a message counter.
As there is a lot of data I think you would need to write a program to reassemble it.
If this is not a direct copy of the original file perhaps you could send that and I could see if it is Logic or Cubase.
Even better if you could get Logic to spit out a real Roland sysex file.

Re: JV-2080 how to restore old midi dump correctly?
Thx for your efforts so far!
I sent you the original file (LSO). I cant remember for sure the version of Logic 3? maybe 4?
Last try: I will sent you an imported Logic 5 file and in addition my Cubase 8 project with imported Midi file (from Logic 5).
Can you open Cubase projects?
There are Trial versions on steinberg.net ...
I will sent it soon when I am at home.
nice weekend,
