JD-990 can't save to memory card? "

Post by Sir_Ricardo »

Greetings -

I recently got a JD-990 (great synth) from eBay, and it sounds great and works perfectly. I think.

I just tried saving some patches to my Roland M-256E card. I followed the Sweetwater directions, below, and when I pressed "Execute" I got this message:

DATA Card Read Only - (JD-800 format)

The card does not have memory protect on.

I then tried to save a JD-990 patch to my Voice Crystal 2 JD-800 card, and got the same message. Again, the card's memory protect is off.

With BOTH of these cards, my JD-990 reads their patches; lots of cool sounds. It's just that the JD-990 can't alter any of the patches on the cards, or save JD-990 patches to the cards.

Any thoughts? I don't have a JD-800 to experiment with; maybe a JD-800 would have better luck?

thanks

Richard

The memory card offers additional storage for user data. This includes data
transfers and bulk dumps.

Use the following procedure to transfer data from the JD-990 to an M-256D/E or
M-512E RAM card:

1) Press UTILITY.
2) Press F4[Card].
3) Press F1[Save].
4) Use the VALUE dial to select what you want to transfer (All, Patch, or
Setup).
5) Press F6[Execute] to transfer the data.

Use the following procedure to transfer data from an M-256D/E or M-512E RAM
card to the JD-990’s internal memory:

1) Press UTILITY.
2) Press F4[Card].
3) Press F2[Load].
4) Use the VALUE dial to select what you want to transfer (All, Patch, or

I've heard tell that the connector design on these is a bit flaky. Sometimes not all pins connect if the card is pushed all the way in. Try pushing it all the way in then withdrawing it a tad. Failing that it my be worth trying to clean the connector. For contact cleaning do not use WD40. My favourite is Deoxit. Use sparingly.

IMO a RAM card formatted with a Roland JD-800 can only be read by a Roland JD-990.
In order for the JD-990 to write to a RAM card, the card must be formatted using a Roland JD-990. Formatting will probably erase all data from the card.
