SVD2SYSX for MSDOS - Anyone have a copy they can upload here?

Post by epu »

Back in the 90s, there was a freeware DOS app called SVD2SYSX that allowed conversion of SVD files to SYSX for the Roland XP/JV series. Does anyone have a copy they can upload here? All traces of it are dead online!

No, not all - as I wrote to your similar post on Gearspace:

If there is a Roland editor for the JV, perhaps it can output a SMF (Standard Midi FIle) under FIle / Export.
All the Roland editors from the XV to SonicSell (I don't have any later Roland synths) have this feature.

Export it as an SMF and use this (from my web site) to turn it into a sysex file.

Hope that helps

Hi all. Could anyone tell me what the syntax is to use the SVD2SYSX.EXE to convert an SVD file to sysex. I have opened a command prompt in the correct folder but all I get when trying to convert an SVD file is an error, so I presume I am using the wrong syntax. Thankyou for any help.

Hi there. I have now found the Syntax for SVD2SYSX simply by entering "SVD2SYSX" or "SVD2SYSX.EXE" in the command window and then pressing enter.

The Syntax is:
Syntax : svd2sysx <in-files>
In-files: SVD files containing PATCH SYSEX

It appears I was getting errors because the SVD file i was trying to change to sysex was not valid or had no sysex strings in it.

Marco Stella's WinJV and WinXP has a wonderful "The muffle" utility section that can extract Performances, Patches and Drumkits from SVD, or even convert SVD to SYX and MID.

https://www.geocities.ws/mstella/index-2.html
Win31 and Win95/98/NT (with long filenames support)
Drag & drop support from FileManager/Explorer
Minimal system requirements
Patch banks organizer
Patch, Performance and Rhythm viewers
Midi pad (with controllers, right click the TEST button)
Full sysex compatibility between all JV/XP synths
Patch/Perf/Rhythm import from many popular file formats (.MID, .WRK, .SVD and others)
Patch import from JV-80/880/90/1000
Sysex to MIDI Format 0 conversion
Patch and Rhythm export as MIDI Fmt0 and Performance export as MIDI Fmt1
Very advanced software, albeit written in VisualBasic 3.0.

It runs OK on WinXP (emulated or retrocomputer).

Just to add to foksadure's post, WinJV will run fine on Windows 7 as well as Windows XP. This is brilliant for a program compiled in VB3.

Do you mean Win7 x86, or is there a way to run it on Win7 x64?

AFAIK, 16bit software does not run on Win7 x64, hence the question about a workaround. Thanks!

About running 16bit software on x64 Windows without using virtualization, there's a new technique that's worth a shot, OTVDM :
