Hi. Have you tried doing a factory reset? The instructions are:

Roland XP-50 Initializing the XP-50 – Restoring the Factory Settings

Press Disk/Utility.
Press 4 on the 10-key pad to select Sound.
Press 5 on the 10-key pad to select Preset.
Press Enter, then use the Value Dial to select Memory Protect Off.
Press Enter twice. The display should say Complete.

Hope that works for you but I haven't got an XP 50 so can't give you anymore instruction other than the above.

Hey,

Thanks for your answer, so how can I dial to "off" if I can't see it?
But yes I tried it, didn't work.
I already replaced all smd caps on the mainboard, no succes either.
This looks more like a booting problem.

Thanks anyway, Mark.

My workshop is in storage so left the mainboard out of my almost dead XP-50 with a colleague for repair today. Almost dead means the display and everything Midi worked, just had weak crackling audio.

A quick probe with a cap tester indicated that most are "dry". A few thoughts from the discussion may be of interest.
That corrosive goo that leaks out of dead caps can damage pcb vias so sometimes you just have to check every darn one.

Same goo can eat the tin plating off of IC leads and migrate into the package destroying the internals. In my case a load of goo had almost surrounded one of the audio buffer IC's so I've insisted that it be replaced as well.

Look carefully for signs lifting or cracking of the solder resist layer for any evidence of goo migration and follow it, leave no stone unturned. Pads and traces on these boards are easily damaged, so if you want to remove an IC, is best to think of cutting the legs flush with the package provided of course that a replacement is available.

Have you replaced all the power supply caps? Not unusual that a CPU will not start cleanly with a dirty power supply.

I measured all the output voltages on the on the power supply, so I guess all the caps are o.k.
