JP8000 sounds different than a JP8080?

Postby Noteman » 23:25, 2 February 2017

Hey,

So my JP8000 has broken down unfortunately. The output periodically oscillates like crazy (from the headphone out), and there is no output from the main jacks, battery/memory errors as well. Oh well, will have to replace some caps and the battery.

Anyway, I happen to have a JP-8080 with me here as well, and to my surprise when comparing the synths I noticed that the JP8000s filter has noticeably quicker decay on the filter for low values, than the JP8000 (which by the way, is brought over from the USA).

What is going on, I though the engines were the same? Could this be a hidden setting somewhere (I have checked that the morphing, keyfollow and LFO are off, same amp env as well). I don't think any of the issues above should affect the core engine. Any ideas?

My JP8000 is now fixed, so that can be ruled out.

I compared the two and these synths definitely sound different! As stated before, JP8000 has a much snappier envelope on the filter than the JP8080. There is also a very noticeable jump between the values 29-30 on the filter decay on the JP8000 (hold shift while moving the sliders to see exact values), while JP8080 doesn't have that drastic change. It also seems like the synths operate at a different sample rate altogether (just by looking at the aliases).

It would be great to hear if anybody else has confirmed the same so I can be sure that it isn't some fault with my settings. Rather weird conclusion...

Can anyone confirm/debunk this?

Yeah, It would be nice to have an outside confirmation. If you have both units I have some patches/settings where the difference becomes very obvious. Although the difference is noticeable in normal use.

Roland support could possibly answer as well. If you live in the USA or Japan maybe you could ask them?
