I believe it's exactly the same sound engine - except the 50 doesn't have two Liveset layers as in the 80. The 50 has one liveset layer.

I guess the other key difference is polyphony; the 50 is 128 note and the 80 is 256.

I don't exactly know how Roland did this, but it seems like if the JP-80 had two JP-50 engines inside.
I'm saying this because of the polyphony... JP-50=128; JP-80= 128+128 (Lower Part+ Upper Part)=256
Cello you can correct me if I'm wrong, but the JP-80 has only 128 Note Polyphony on each of the Lower/Upper Parts and not 256 all together...I think...

Interesting question.

I'm not sure.

The operating guide says "256 voices (varies according to the sound generator load)" but doesn't go into how the polyphony is structured (ie 128 per layer or 256 irrespective)

The Juno-Stage is a kind of Juno-Di on steroids, but basically similar to the Di and SonicCell, just having a 76 Keybed. A very good machine for a "one Man's band" with all the "bread and Butter" sounds.

The JP-50 is a complete different "beast", with a VA Synth (SN-S) and SN-A (SuperNatural Acoustic), more dedicated as a Main Synth, perfect for Performance and massive layering (not as deep as the 80, but still...)

I don't know if I would consider it as an upgrade... just a different machine

I had the Juno Stage previously before buying the Jupiter 80, the 50 would be an upgrade depending on what you used the most on the stage, if you used the multitimbral element of the Stage and still need this maybe not but if you want more control and better in depth synth sounds with nice accoustic type tones then it's the right choice, 128 Note Polyphony should be fine to be honest, I trialled a 50 for a week before getting the JP80 just because of the larger screen for Synth Editing.
