Effectivness of Spatialised Sound over stereo?

Post by knolan »

Could anyone hear spatialised / motion surround over headphones when invoked in the demo below - I couldn't? (and do you think it's a valid demo to make this query)?

(from around 2.30 on the 2nd video on this page)

Overall - can anyone indicate from experience how effective the Integra-7's motion surround will be over stereo?

Thanks Dany - very interesting.

While on the first video the motional surround works well in front of you, I don't really get any sense of sound behind

The second video is far more intriguing however. Here, there is no denying the better fidelity of the individual sounds when heard straight-up and without motional surround. However, with motional surround on, the instruments clearly sit within a well defined and spatialised space - as if you are now truly listening to a live ensemble in an acoustic space.

I could well imagine using that when looking for more realistic orchestral mock-ups, or in general in any music / recording where you are now much more aware of the position and interaction of the ensemble sound rather than a stack of individual programs on separate tracks. I think Roland are really onto something here (which I hadn't quite thought about even when reading the blurb on it). Very intriguing (and I have to say - the orchestral samples on board the Integra-7 sound very respectable too!!).

Overall, with such a wealth of supernatural sounds, SRX sample libraries and now this, for want of a better phrase, "ensemble space" all available in Integra-7, Roland have produced an incredibly potent "playing" machine. I oozes playability. It's what I admire about Roland since the V-Synth-GT though to the JP80 and now this - they are thinking so much about inventing new music technology for playability.

IMO, if all of this was offered as a software product it could rival the likes of Vienna Symphonic Library and would attract a wide user base. I feel that, sold as a hardware platform, there will be a lot of film composers who will not buy and use it because of the hassle of integrating more hardware into their tightly configured master keyboard/computer library setup.
