Quantifying Master Volume

Post by BruceV »

Is there any info on the relation between master volume setting (0 - 127) and dB, ie. if 127 = 0dB, what are the dB values for, eg. 100, 80, 60, 40. TIA

Here’s an approximate answer to my query, obtained in about 10 minutes with a DSO, and a relatively stable waveform (they're few and far between, in fact).

Why might this be useful? Because equal dB increments correspond to equal perceptions of loudness. 1dB is considered the minimum perceptible change. For boosting for lead lines, I knock the level up by about 5dB.

MASTER
VOLUME dB
127 0
120 -1
110 -3.3
100 -5.5
80 -9
60 -14
40 -19
30 -24
20 -29
0 -Inf

Note that this is pure dB, and isn't indicative of actual level. It is with internal volume curves (there are a couple that I haven’t investigated yet) at their default powerup values.

I’ll be converting to a regression equation shortly, if anyone would like ongoing results, just post. Cheers
