Hidden SC-55 in Integra-7

Post by Spikey699 »

Hey guys,

I keep assuming this would be mentioned somewhere, but it really doesn't seem so, so I will post about it.

Hardly the most exciting function of the beast that is the I7, but if you send GM patches with Bank Select MSB/LSB both as 0, the tone called up will be a Roland SC-55 emulation of the GM patch you selected (ala SC-8820/50, and Sound Canvas VA). It also includes GS patches at the 55 level (eg Dist Gt has Feedback Gt).
If you try and change the patch it will revert back to a 'normal' patch bank. Same as on an 8850, in XG Lite mode, if you try to tweak a patch change knob while an XG instrument is displayed on screen.

So, a hidden SC-55 in the Integra. Not sure why this hasn't been mentioned before, and very confused why the patches aren't listed in the sound list (or anywhere), or why they exist in the Integra in the first place. For me they are very useful though and a welcome bonus on top of everything else.

Bouncing between (starting at) page 25 of "Integra Sound List.pdf" and the "8850.pdf" (I own both SC-8850 and Integra 7, as well as XV-5080 and Fantom XR - LOL) but easier to use the manuals then looking at displays, it seems to be that the list from the I7 manual called "GM2 Tone (PCM Synth Tone)" is a MIXTURE of SC55, SC88 and SC8850 maps.

However, with some minor NAME tweaks (like adding a "1" to some names where a "1" was assumed in the 8850 [see patch 25, under guitars, in 8850 manual - "nylon gt.") and augmenting with an additional GS tones where SC55 didn’t' have a tone (i.e., adding in a 128 more GS tones to the usual GM base of 128 patches so that I7 has 256 GM2 tones)

Further, looking at the lists I think someone at Roland took the basic SC55 tone bank LIST as the starting point for the I7 GM set and replaced some tones with better tones moving "up" to better tones where available (i.e., from tones in SC55 to SC88 to SC8850) - again (to be redundant) with minor renaming and adding in GS tones from the 88 and 8850 to round out total Integra7 GM2 set to 256 patches.

JUST IMO

bluesplayer:

I'm not talking about the GM2 section. I'm talking about a hidden SC-55 section separate from the GM2 section, which sounds different from the GM2 section. It sounds like the SC-55 map of the SC-8850.

I agree, the GM2 section sounds like various old SC units, and the rest of what you said seems accurate also.

OK I'll take a look later it does sound like an "interesting" (i.e., curious) find but....

even if that's the case I'd never call it up anyway I'd use the default I7 GM set.

Well exactly, but it has potential for gaming, since many (read: almost all) computer games were composed for the Roland SC-55 between 1991 and 1996.

Just another cherry on the top :)

I assume you guys are using SONAR or some other supported DAW to send these patches. Can anyone advise me how to select patches for the Integra-7 using CuBase.

I am so frustrated trying to find CuBase Patch Scripts for the Integra-7 I am almost ready to throw this awesome machine away!
