Releasing one of the Studio Sets today. More to follow, and these will likely be hosted on cello's site. For now though, it makes sense to put em here as singles. The zip file attached is called 80SPOKER1.zip and includes a readme file, as well as a 80s+PokerFace.SVD backup file. This backup file is meant to be put onto your SD Card, then do a Utility -> Import Studio Set / Tone. This is mentioned in the readme file, but please do a backup before proceeding with Importing the Studio Sets. If you have a full backup of your FA... you can do whatever, without fear of screwing something up. :)

Contents of this backup --
Studio Set 1: Pokerface - BennySeven developed this one, and it's fantastic. There are multiple tones mapped across the keyboard. I found, it helped (with the way I play Pokerface) to drop the whole keyboard down one octave.
Studio Set 2: PokerFace - JDoo. Was something I had developed based on my MainStage setup. I found myself looking over at how BennySeven set things up, and learned much from his setup. This was developed on my FA-06, so the keyboard is already mapped to the lower registers.

Essentially, these are layered tones on a split keyboard. Both are setup with keyboard switches on the parts... but for this song at least, you dont really need to mess with them.

Comments welcome (and requested ).

Joe

Single #2. Journey's World's Apart (Separate Ways). Again - please do not post/distribute off this site without permission.

The zip here is called 80SEPAR1.zip and contains a backup with the single FA Studio Set "80sSeparateWayz.SVD". Like the others.. do a backup first, then follow the Roland guide for "Import Studio Set/Tone". This will add this Studio Set to whatever else you have on your FA, without clobbering anything (if you select an empty spot to drop it).

Contents of this backup --
Studio Set 1: 80sSeparateWayz - I layered two brass tones along with the Grand Piano (which I did for punch, but can be discarded). The layers are across the entire keybed. I also dropped all tones an Octave (which allows things to fit onto the FA-06 a little better).

That's it. Enjoy. Comments welcome.

Single #3. Coldplay's Clocks. Again - please do not post/distribute these contents off the Roland Clan Forums site without permission.

The zip here is named 80sCLKS1.zip and contains a readme file and an FA backup "80sClockz1.SVD". Coldplay Clocks. (wait... that ain't 80s)! :) Like the others.. do a backup of your FA first, then follow the Roland guide for "Import Studio Set/Tone". This will add the Studio Set(s) to whatever else you have on your FA, without clobbering anything (if you select an empty spot to drop it).

Studio Set: Clocks KN6. This has biting pianos, and pads with a hard split. It sounds fantastic, and was provided by user Bennyseven on the forums here.
Studio Set: Clocks - is layered Pads , strings and Pianos. No split. There's a little compression, some reverb, chorus and echo - but that's it. Different from the other Studio Set in layering, tones and effects. I included it, because it's closer to the MainStage Concert I have been using (and I am too lazy to learn to play Clocks with a split). In any case, it may give you an idea of what you can do with these Studio Sets. Change, add, delete tones, add effects, alter splits/layers - make the sound fit your playing style, and sit in with your mix better. Or.. use em to see how others are putting together songs / sounds. I borrowed from BennySeven's version with pride, after seeing how he had layered pianos at different octaves (way cool).

If anyone is interested, I can provide a writeup of how I am creating individual Studio Sets in the backups. It's not difficult, and makes keeping a master list of songs/versions pretty straight forward.

That's it. Enjoy. Comments welcome.

Single #4. Europe’s 1986 hit “Final Countdown”. I think there are a few other Roland FA versions of Final Countdown's rolling around... this is my version. I made this one as a keyboard split with Brass Leads up top and Chorus'd lower part.

Like the others.. do a backup first, then follow the Roland guide for "Import Studio Set/Tone". Single #5. Michael Jackson’s 1982 “Thriller”. Heavy Brass, Organ and Bass dominate the layers and splits in this arrangement This set could use a Pad sound, for the verse parts, but you can fake it by playing light on the lower octave bits, as velocity sensitivity keeps the brass in check. As always, comments and suggestions are welcome. I have received a small amount of off-thread comments... thank you for those!

Single #6. ’s Billy Idol’s 1981 version of “Mony Mony”. Much like so many other songs of this era, there is heavy delay, chorus, reverb stretched across the patches that make up the keyboard sounds. This song is a ton of fun to play… and get’s folks on their feet. There really isn’t much to the Studio Set other than three layered parts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYYAv-QW38Q is a good way to learn the song.

Lucky Single #7 (#12 posted) is Harold Ftltemeyer’s “Axel F”. Inspired by a version I use in GarageBand / Logic Pro and by seeing a version played on Woody's Piano Shack on a Roland FA. Woody may be sharing his version (yay) in a few weeks. This version also has some parts not enabled by default (the bell / breaks). You can wire these up with the KBD switch, connect it to pads.. and enable them on the fly. I just didnt have room on my keybed (FA-06) to map these by themselves. An FA-08 might be able to put all the parts live.. without having to juggle KBD switching the parts. Lastly - I put a lot of echo on the lead. I do this, to cover my sloppy play :) - so you may want to tone that down. Like all of these Studio Sets- please experiment with the Tones, Effects, mapping, etc... These are meant to spark collaboration / sharing techniques and better ways of doing stuff.

The zip here is called 80sAXEL1.zip and contains a backup with the single FA Studio Set "80sAxelF.SVD". Like the others.. do a backup first, then follow the Roland guide for "Import Studio Set/Tone". Note --
I realized that I play a lot of these Studio Sets / sounds from my FA-06 though my Axiom, which has a stronger velocity curve. I have changed my system settings on my FA-06 to make it easier to get velocity sensitivity for the way I play. Since some of these Studio Sets need velocity to bring out the tones (certainly, this one does... where the EPs need to be hammered, to get the bells to ring out, imo) - I have set the System Level Velocity Curves to accommodate them. You may want to use similar settings, if you're not getting enough action on a FA-06.
System:
Keyboard Settings
Keyboard Velocity: [ Real]
Keyboard Velocity Curve: [Light]
Keyboard Velocity Curve Offset [ -4 ]

Hi,

thanks for the studio sets. I was fumbling with velocity and found velocity offset parameters using the part view. Is this an option in your case, too?

Hi Frank -

I'll take a look. I know the settings are available at the system level (across all Studio Sets). If they can be set at the Studio Set level, that would be even better (I could set them in these backups, and they could apply to just these sets). Thanks for the heads up.

Just checked Frank. This is a great find! I may start using Studio Set velocity settings. For my own uses, I have my FA-06 set to be pretty sensitive to velocity, but these are at the SYSTEM level, and apply to all Studio Sets on my system. For sharable sets, it makes good sense to bake sensitivity into the sets. I have some sets, that low velocity may impact the tones. For example, I am posting a Studio Set with Styx "Babe" on it in a minute. That Studio Set has a couple of parts that are comprised of ePianos ( "Phaser Tine", and "90 Shift EP") which both have velocity sensitive tine action. They play fine for me, but someone with an FA-06 (I have heard the FA-08 may have better velocity sensitivity) may not hear the parts right. Anyway - thanks for the heads up!

This is a Studio Set that makes up the parts for the Styx' 1979 song "Babe”. The ePiano parts both react well to velocity, so set your FA velocity sensitivity accordingly, to get the most out of this set. Also - I left the strings on (KBD on) by default. You may want to turn that off, and enable it just for the chorus bits.

The zip here is called 80sbabe1.zip and contains a backup with the single FA Studio Set "80sBabe.SVD". Unzip it first, copy to your SD card - then like the others.. do a backup first, then follow the Roland guide for "Import Studio Set/Tone". This will add this Studio Set to whatever else you have on your FA, without clobbering anything (if you select an empty spot to drop it).
