MX-1 Change amount of steps in the sequencer

Am I dreaming or is there a way to select how many steps to use on each channel? Example I select the first 2 steps on channel one and it splits the whole section in two so I can mute half the bar without pressing 8 buttons. Is ther a key combo for this that I have missed?
