Hello, Everyone - I just got a new/used midi controller, a CME UR5.
It works. I tested it with an MT80s - no problem.

I then plugged the controller into my System1 midi in port, and thought the controller would operate the system-1.

But nothing happened. What do I need to do to plug in a midi controller to the System-1 and have the controller play the system-1?

Check the manual to set the midi port of the system-1 to omni, then you should be able to play the keys of the midi controller and hear the sound of the s1.
