This went perhaps a bit unnoticed. Roland released TR-8 firmware update 1.50 to trigger the SP which also includes a change to set the sample rate of the TR-8.

Release note state that pad 16 Modes are Lit white, Blinking yellow and Blinking blue, but don't see the blinking yellow but more of bright white blinking color. The new generated MIDI notes seem to be: BD - B2, SD - C3, LT - C#3, MT - D3, HT - D#3, RS - E3, HC- F3, CH - F#3, OH - G3, CC - G#3, RC - A3

It seems you can only trigger 11 of the 12 sounds in a pattern on the SP and only one pattern
There seems no way to change the MIDI notes numbers on the TR-8 and the SP's are fixed as well.
Some news report said " you can now trigger any external gear". Wrong . you can now ALSO trigger the fixed note SP. Looks like a lame and limited F/W update just for those who happen to have an SP.
If you really want to play samples, probably look elsewhere for a more (MIDI) flexible sampler.

A question about this update:
I am running Osx 10.6.8. Can I still use this update? It says it needs Osx 10.10 minimum.
