TR-8S Demo Pattern 1-04... Why Kick Soft?

The factory pattern 1-04 "Tribal Nation", for variations A-C, the kick is loud and accented on the quarter notes, and on pattern D, there is no kick programmed. If you enter TR-REC and put in a few kick notes in pattern D, they are super quiet.

It's not because of accents, and it's not a "weak" beat issue (involving the shift button and the dimly lit steps).

Anyone have any idea what's going on here?
