Could someone explain to me what is the point of the built-in patterns in the JD-Xi?
They seem to be way too short to build a song around them individually. The style types are all rather dated and there aren't enough similar ones in each style to build a full progression. And they are randomly spread around in no particular order so it is difficult to smoothly jump between them.
As far as I can see, the only purpose of them is to use them as a basis for building your own patterns. But you'd need to do a hell of a lot of work on them to make anything useful from them.
Or am I missing something obvious here!!

You kind of answered your own question. It's not meant to be full fledged groove box. So the patterns are just to give you ideas on the style or whatever it is you're making.
