JD-Xi TB MIDI Stuff iPad Editor

Post by rocco1 »

Hi,

I posted this on Gearslutz, and thought I'd post it here, as well.

I've created an iPad editor for the JD-Xi, using a $4.99 app called, TB MIDI Stuff.
There are template pages for:
Digital Synth 1
Digital Synth 2
Analog Synth
Drums 1 (first octave of keyboard)
Drums 2 (second octave of keyboard)
Effects

The synth editors were pretty straight forward, but the drum section was really heavy, due to settings for 8 voices per 26 keys with velocity layering, panning, pitching, etc. My iPad Air 2 couldn't handle it, so I broke it up into two sections and kept it to the most settings that it could handle.
I also couldn't export the complete Canvas Snapshot, because it kept crashing on export, so I've exported each page individually. As a result, the navigation buttons on top of the pages won't work correctly unless you load up the pages into your own snapshot in the same order.
The effects section isn't 100% working. I'm able to send values to the synth, but I'm not skilled enough with MIDI sysex to figure out why I couldn't read the values to the iPad.
The TBMS pages are fully editable, so if anyone figures out how to fix my errors, please feel free to edit and share.

It's been a while since I posted this and since there haven't been any replies, I'm curious if anyone's tried it and whether it's been at all helpful.

It's a pity I don't own an iPad (will never buy one either, for ideological reasons...), because I would really want to play with this. The screenshots are awesome - great work! I hope someone will try it out.

In a way, it was helpful to me even though I cannot use it :), since I saw what potential the JD-Xi has "inside". I wonder if something similar could be done for Android...

Thanks. The JD-Xi does have a lot of potential. I borrowed the screen layout from the Roland editors for the Integra and Jupiters. If I'm not mistaken, the SuperNatural Synth engine in the JD-Xi is functionally the same as the others, but has fewer waveforms.

I now have an FA-06 and I think it wouldn't be too hard to adapt this template to that and FA-08, but unfortunately, I don't have the time to do it.

Hey there!

Just wanted to say thank you for this. It works quite well and makes editing a pleasure. It takes the JD-Xi to another level.

One thing I noticed is that you have to arrange the pages in the correct order in a row to get the Digital/Digital/Analog/Drums/Effects buttons to work properly. I was confused for a bit when I loaded them in the wrong order.

I did crash the JD-Xi once. It just hung and needed to be restarted. Also, I notice that Digital 1 occasionally loads the acoustic piano sound randomly for no obvious reason. Anyone else get this?

Anyways, it works pretty well despite those little hiccups.

For us idiots out here, could you please explain how I load the editor into my iPad.

Looking forward to giving it a try.

You have to connect your iPad via iTunes. In the Sync settings, you can find a section for apps, where each app is listed. Click on TB Midi Stuff, and there is a box below that shows the file section for that app. You can then select the files you downloaded to be synced. After syncing, the pages will be available on the iPad.

If I remember correctly, you can use the Dropbox app to download the tbms files and then "Open In..." to open the files directly in TB Midi Stuff.

I just use the Apple Camera Connection Kit which is an adapter that goes from usb to iOS (lightning or 30 pin) plug.

I've got an iPad Air2, so I can't vouch for the newer models.

I plan to try this. I just got the JD-Xi and it has a deeper pcm synth than I thought it would. It needs an editor. I need to order the camera cable for my Ipad Air2.

Hi rocco1,
Do the knobs respond to sysex ?
(meaning turning a knob on Jd-Xi move knobs on the editor)

Thank you for your hard work
