Connecting Guitar

I have played around with this synth for a while and become fairly used to its features so I decided to plug in a guitar through the back panel. No sound at all, anyone else having this problem? Maybe I have a dud synth? Switched the switch to guitar, connected to amp-it seemed that simple-it never is!
