Cakewalk Instrument Definition INS File For JD-X1

Hi all,

I have a Roland JD-XI on order arriving next week and I'd like to integrate it into my home studio.

I do my sequencing on Cakewalk Music Creator and Cakewalk Home Studio 9.01 running under Linux WINE Windows Emulator..

What I am looking for is a proper Cakewalk Instrument Definitions File for the JD-XI.

Frankly I don't care if it was community created or if it's available as a direct download from Cakewalk or Roland, as long as it works.

Considering that Roland actually owns Cakewalk and since the JD-XI has been around for over a year now, I don't think I'm asking for the impossible here.

I have minimal experience creating my own INS files and I'd really rather not deal with the hassle of rolling my own if someone else has already done this for us.

Any input on where to locate such a file would be welcomed with open arms.

Thanks for listening,

Gary ;)

PS. I saw a similar thread here from a year ago with no replies.

Hopefully by now someone will have come up with a solution.

Good news folks.

After two days of blood, sweat, tears, hairpulling and debugging I've created a mostly working Cakewalk INS file for the JD-Xi.

All that's missing are the controllers and the drum voice maps.

If anyone else wants to add those be my guest.

For the most part though, it will allow you to sequence your projects on any Cakewalk DAW with minimum grief.

No applause please. Just throw money :D

File is attached.

Thanks for that fella!

Its early days for me but I'm still trying to figure out how you would call up Techno Kit 3 directly? Its Program A02 but isn't one of thee 33 kits listed. I assume that is the same sounds as Techno Kit 1 (or 2, or indeed they are all the same) but with different Effects applied to them.

The sound/program/tones list are just as frustrating!

Cheers, Liam.

Unfortunately my studio is currently all packed up and away with an impending move in a few months so I can't access my gear at the moment.

Hopefully someone else will step up and explain it in the meantime.

Otherwise it may end up taking me a while to get back to you on this.

Recently edited and upgraded the file. Removed a bunch of illegal characters from the voice names that were screwing up the sequences.

Hopefully this one will work better.

Still not sure if Roland Firmware Upgrade 1.5x screwed up the filenames or not though.

seems to be mostly working properly now though.

I just bought this synthesizer. I thank Greg for starting the instrument file. I corrected and completed it.

; Correct MSB and LSB values.
; Correct patches names, add Category.
; Differentiates the tones of programs.
; Add controllers.
; Add Drum Maps.
; Add the possibility of having the instruments by channels
; (ch:01=digital 1, ch:02=digital 2, ch:03=analog, ch:10=drumkits)
; or for the whole synthesizer for your own midi map.
; Thanks to Gary G. for initiating this work.

Thanks for correcting the file, but the name's "Gary" not "Greg." Greg is my nephew. :D

I'll test out the file at my earliest opportunity.

BTW, it might have also been more prudent to put the version number into the Zip File Name.

And big thanks back atcha. I have a rudimentary understanding of Cakewalk INS files but I get bogged down on the controller details and drum maps and such.

I'll post your file with your permission over on the cakewalk forums as well.

The JD-Xi is really a bitchin little synth that you'll enjoy for years to come. The only items on my wish list for a future upgrade are:

1) Assignable channels to any voices regardless of which engine they are using.

2) The ability to save individual patches on their own without having to save an entire sequence and performance together.

If Roland had spent $100 more on the hardware I'm certain we wouldn't be stuck with these limitations.

Take care Cedric,

Thanks again from all of us :)

No problem for the Cakewalk forum. With pleasure :)

For me, the major improvement would be to be able to save its own tones for use in other programs.

People will also be pleased to hear that there's a new editor available for the JD-Xi for multiple platforms free of charge over at

http://jdxi-manager.linuxtech.net/

I just discovered it last week and haven't really tried it out yet.

Also, in case people haven't heard yet, there's a free overlay for the front panel of the JD-Xi if you got stuck with the unreadable red on black controls.

Just email Roland service in your country and request it and it will be shipped to you free of charge splendidly packaged against breakage.

Many thanks to Roland for supporting my unit which was already 3 months out of warranty when I ordered it.

Be well and keep the beat y'all...

You can already do this with JD-XI Manager. Each synth part has it's own save dialogue, even the drums. I have all the factory patches organized into folders. I also have all of my own presets organized separately. That took awhile but it is a beautiful thing.
