Question about assigning and selecting Favorites

The manual seems clear, you press the Favorites button and then press a step button on the sequencer while your preset is called up, then do the same with your other favorites, assigning them to other step buttons. But when I actually do it, whatever preset I currently have called up gets assigned to the button I press, overwriting the previous favorites assignment. Am I messing up by going to the Favorites section before pressing my selection? should I use the step button to call up a favorite when the synth is just in regular mode? Any input appreciated.
