JD-XiMidi Hardware controller

Post by leelou10 »

Hi all,

I have been in search of a hardware controller some 3 months after I bought the JD-Xi. I have the Patch editor on my computer, but having sat 9 hours straight behind a monitor, I really need something else to boost creativity.
Many topics exist about adding physical control to the JD-Xi. Most of you will probably have learned that the JD-Xi speaks very little CC and mostly sysex. Unfortunately the number of midi controllers supporting sysex is very limited (apart from the hassle to program it correctly).

On youtube, I came across a video of some guy (named Efren) that had made his own midi controller with an arduino board, with some really nice casing, knobs and switches (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxhCViqOPvc&t=613s , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zazc2pPbOmM and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GU30MJpwkxg ). I approached him and eventually ended up buying one from him (cost me about 85 euro's excl shipping).

It is really off the scale how much workflow boost comes from this device. Muting different drum sections, having actual ADSR on your filter, amp and pitch per voice-part! at your fingertips, voice part mutation and so on. I know it may feel as a gamble to buy some home-brew device from a guy from Spain, I had my doubts too. But honestly, I wish I'd done this so much sooner!

So if you're looking to better hardware control your JD-Xi --> Go to Efren!
