(SH-01A) Step sequencing with 'MIDI in' VS 'EXT In'?

I'm used to making melodies slaving the SH01A to an EXT IN clicker from a drum machine.
Can I use the same method, programing the melody/steps on the SH01A and launching them via Midi In from an external drum machine?
I was thinking about Using Midi Out from an iPhone Drum Machine (Patterning 2)
Ideas? (:
