JX-03 Cross Mod options - what EXACTLY do they do?

Post by vst_twc »

I'm trying to figure out what the Sync1, Sync2, Metal1 and Metal2 cross mod options are. I know what Sync is in cross modulation, but I can't get any specific info about the difference between Sync1 and Sync2. And I'm wondering exactly what Metal1 and Metal2 are doign to the wave forms.

This is what the JX-03 manual says:
SYNC 1–2
This is oscillator sync. It generates a complex waveform by forcibly resetting DCO-2 to
the beginning of its cycle in synchronization with the DCO-1 frequency. Setting the
value to 2 produces a greater effect.

MET 1–2 (METAL)
Produces a metallic sound by using the DCO-2 waveform to modulate the DCO-1
frequency. Setting the value to 2 produces a greater effect.
I'm kinda guessing that Sync1 and Sync2 are doing soft and hard sync, like as described here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscillator_sync. Although there are multiple types of soft sync. Is this right?

The Metal1 and Metal2 sound like some sort of FM synthesis?

Sync 1 and 2 are the same effect, only the oscillators are reversed.

sync 1 -> DCO 2 hard synced to DCO 1
sync 2 -> DCO 1 hard synced to DCO 2

metal 1 -> DCO 2 FM modulated by DCO 1
metal 2 -> DCO 1 FM modulated by DCO 2

The manual itself is quite unclear about the difference.
Sync 2 and metal 2 are not available on the original JX-3P.

If I'm wrong, then please correct me.
