If the TB-03 is turned on with the WRITE/NEXT button held down, all LEDs flash, and the display says "50".
Does anyone know what this mode is for?
(no key or knob appears to do anything in this mode)

Is there a reason you're turning it on with this button held down? Often button-hold-on-startup sets the machine into update or calibration modes which are intended to be hidden from the user. You might try to locate a Service Manual and see if there is info there about what this button press on startup does.
