installing audacity on mandriva 2006

Post by ahasverus »

Hi everybody,

I recently installed Mandriva 2006 (got fed up with windows).

I can't get audacity installed, does someone know how?

There isn't a specific package for Mandriva, is it possible to use another package?

Thanks.

Audacity 1.2.3 is there in the contrib repository. You can add the contrib repository by going to http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/: select 2006, then mark "contrib" source, press "proceed to step 3". You'll get a command line that you need to execute as root (su root), then don't exit the root mode and say "urpmi audacity" or launch the control centre -> install software and search for "audacity" there.

Hehe, I am glad to help. I myself use Mandriva 2006 and it's cool, works pretty darned fast compared to previous releases. Tried Kubuntu, but there will be too much manual commandline work as they don't have any GUI config tool like MCC.

BTW, you should install the multimedia kernel and enable the realtime module if you want to work with audio/MIDI with lowest possible latency. You need to search for "kernel-multimedia" in the contribs. Then if you wish I'll tell you how to switch on the realtime module.

Yes, Mandriva 2006 is cool. I'm not using it a long time, but I allready like it very much. If I can get recording on different tracks with low latency, windows will be history for me.

So the "kernel-multimedia" can be installed the same way as audacity? And how can I be sure I don't have it installed?

I think the realtime module is switched on. That is when I booted Mandriva for the first time and tried Amarok, I got a warning to set the soundengine (?) to realtime, and I did.

When I tried to record from line-in I got a good quality with stereo-tracks but a bad quality with mono-tracks, I didn't had the time to try multiple tracks and test the latency yet.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it very much!

Well, if you didn't install the multimedia kernel yourself, then you don't have it installed since it's not part of Mandriva base CDs. Yes, do it the same way you installed Audacity. After that go to Mandriva Control Center and in boot manager set the multimedia kernel to the default one (otherwise you'll have to select it in boot manager every time you boot your Mandriva).

OK, I installed the kernel, had a problem with the bootloader at first but I eventually managed to get it right.

Switching on the realtime-module, is this through configure workenvironment, sound and then checking realtime-priority? (I'm not sure the names of the menus are correct, I'm using the dutch version and tried to translate them litterally)
Because when I do that and start audacity I get the error message that there was a problem initialising the audio I/O layer. ( I gues that means some other process is using it?)

I didn't have time to try and record multiple tracks today, so that will be for tomorrow.

And thanks again, if you didn't told me about the multimedia kernel, I wouldn't even know it existed. (I guess I should spend more time on Mandriva forums... )
