Cleaning D50 keyboard contacts
Cleaning D50 keyboard contacts
Anyone knows of an online tutorial explaining how to clean the contacts and the keys on Roland D50? I can't find it anywhere.
Re: Cleaning D50 keyboard contacts
I guess I am the only owner of D50 who has problems with dirty contacts.

Re: Cleaning D50 keyboard contacts
hm...I think you're probably right
Re: Cleaning D50 keyboard contacts
Why not contact your nearest Roland service center?
Re: Cleaning D50 keyboard contacts
there isn't any near me...I will take it to the Korg repair shop - I wasn't in the mood to pay 100 euros for a cleaning job, but I guess I will have to

So Sorry I didn't reply to this post earlier! Go here to find out everything you need to know about cleaning and repairing a D-50: http://electro-music.com/forum/viewtopi ... torder=asc.
A repair center in the US will charge up to $250,00 for a cleaning but with great care and following the steps you can do it yourself.

Re: Cleaning D50 keyboard contacts
Any questions on it just post and I'll give you a hand. Just make sure that when you open it up and start to take it apart go slow and make notes of which screws go where, etc. You'll need small plastic cable ties as you'll have to clip the ones in there that bundle wires, remove the contact strips VERY carefully....they can rip quite easily... and be especially careful with the main processor! You'll have to remove it to get the keyboard out. You don't want to damage that thing....or else no more D-50! This is a big job, too. Took me about a week!
Re: Cleaning D50 keyboard contacts
A week!!!!
I'm no specialist repair guy but it only took me a day to strip and clean the whole D50,thats including the key contacts Key bed and all the switches!with the whole synth in pieces.
its basically Just common sense how these things are assembled, every part is logically Built into the synth in a particular order and put in its place that if you have a little common sense and a little mechanical thinking you don't need to worry.
Oh and don't over clean the Key contact dots on the circuit Board or it will have the reverse effect, you may find a couple of Keys that were working before, have stopped triggering or registering Velocity,if you over clean them it can make it worse.
Clean them but also before you assemble it just lightly rub a little paper over them.

Re: Cleaning D50 keyboard contacts
It took me a week to both clean AND repair the keys that were out. I had to troubleshoot as to why they weren't working, which involved trying a few things, like putting the thing back together to see if what I had done worked and when it didn't, taking the thing apart again and trying something else. I had never owned a D-50 nor had I ever taken a synth apart before. This D-50 is 20 yrs. old and if you screw something up, like damaging the processor on it you're screwed.
I then had to re-solder the connections on the PCB board which solved the problem. Plus I was working with someone from Australia on electro-music.com on this, we were putting up detailed photos and a complete step by step for other D-50 owners to refer to which ended up being about 4 pages, plus I like to do things right.....plus I was taking care of my 4 yr. old son......try doing all that in a day.

Re: Cleaning D50 keyboard contacts
I just found the guide with photos: http://www.bustedgear.com/repair_Roland_d50_key_contact...
Gothboy, I've read somewhere that you're having troubles with the keys again...same here. I took it to the repair shop then (2007) and 2 keys are busted again.
This time I want to try and do it myself, since it seems this will happen a lot and I could get the MEX expansion board for that money...
