Roland MT-200 Tutorials and other useful information

Post by ITC-CrossBow »

There isn't a ton of information regarding these MT type devices so I thought I would share what I've learned using my MT-200 that I picked up over a month ago. The MT series was primarily designed to assist in teacher music and how to play piano. However, they are much more than that, especially in the case of the MT-200.

It is both a sequencer and sound module. It contains the sound canvas 300+ sound bank and with both Midi In/Out and Thru ports, it can be used as a stand alone sound module in addition to using the built in disk drive to record and playback midi music in both .mid and RSC, RSD formats.

I've started a series of videos on the MT-200 that I am hoping are of use to others that might own one or might consider purchasing one for their needs. My uses are strictly retro PC gaming focused, but the videos are more generic than that. I've done parts 1 and 2 of a 3 part video tutorial along with other odds and ends using it.

An introduction to the MT-200:

I will get started on part 3 of the tutorial soon where I focus on how I have the MT-200 and an MT-32 connected to my modern windows 10 64bit computer and configured to work with old DOS games of the late 80s and 90s era. Again, my reasons for owning are strictly entertainment use. But I figured some of the information I share isn't documented that I've found and most of what I cover is what I've figured out in using it on my own.

Enjoy!

Part 3 of my MT-200 basic tutorial is done and upped to YouTube. In this final video segment featuring the MT-200 I go through the basic hardware needed to connect it to a modern Windows10 computer and show my setups for ScummVM and DosBOX to use it. Finally I show how I have the MT-200 connected to my personal computer along with the MIDI pass-thru to also use my Roland MT-32 as well and show a final demonstration at the end on everything in use using the game Space Quest 1 (VGA remake). The audio is poor on the last section due to how much compression the Geforce Experience software uses for audio it would seem but I've not found a better way to capture my desktop and audio in perfect sync for less. Thanks for viewing these if you have and it has been a lot of fun learning this wonderful sound module and understanding its secrets! Enojy!
