Trying and failing to use S8 VST as a Librarian. Help!

Post by gypsymoth »

Hi

I'm desperate to find a patch librarian for my System 8 - don't want to overwrite what's already there but don't want to lose my hard work when I switch the thing off.

A suggested solution has been to use the Roland Cloud System 8 VST. Fine. I've logged into cloud, opened the VST in Ableton and it appears in all its ugly glory

In Settings I've got MIDI Control Input System 8 System 8 CTRL etc (see attached), and the physical System 8 works fine from a midi point of view

But when I press 'GET', I get a message saying "MIDI Communication Failed"

It's driving me mental. Any ideas why this might be happening? Genuinely considering binning the S8 because its such a bad patch management system

Thanks

Do you have a USB hub in the middle? I couldn't load a plugin with a USB hub attached. I had to directly connect the S-8 to the PC.

Hi. Yes I do. Tried going direct to my iMac the other day with no luck. What I might try is going direct AND choosing ‘System 8’ as a MIDI device rather than ‘SYSTEM 8 CTRL’

Thanks

It is correct to set both the midi input and output to System-8 CTRL in the VSTi settings.

Just removing the hub should be sufficient.

Direct USB connection to computer
Click SETTING button.
Choose "SYSTEM-8 CTRL" for both MIDI CTRL Input and Output.

Oh and DO NOT enable the System-8 CTRL as a midi device in your DAW

Thanks
so the very first thing is to backup to a SD card. copy a copy of this backup on you PC. now you have 2 backups of your hard work. Now you can test the librarian without any risk....

That's what you get when you abandon good old Sysex. SD cards, PC file copying and Cloud Lock-in.

There's a good chance you may get things to work out if you load the System 8 VST-plugin in the Steinberg VST3PluginTestHost, as discussed here:

Plug-Out from Steinberg VST3PluginTestHost

Download and un-zip the VST 3.6.9 Audio Plug-Ins SDK from here, and install the VST3PluginTestHost_x64.
