My band wants to play Living on a Prayer by bon jovi. The link below is the best one i have found for creating all the sounds needed. Problem us, he is using a Fantom, and has setup 7 zones for seven different patches. I have an rd2000 and cant figure out a tenth of what this board can do. It says i can set 8 zones but i can only do 4, as 5-8 say External, whatever the heck that means. The rd2000 user manual is useless and not comprehensive at all. Typical of all keyboard manuals i suppose. Yamaha is no better. So how can i program all these patches into the zones they call for? Is it possible on my 2000?

To your question, activating the zones (5/8) is easy, read the instructions for use on page 14, see the screenshot of the manual. On the other hand, on these zones (5/8) you cannot assign effects to them.
If you don't bother to read it, you'll miss a lot of possibilities, the RD 2000 is a big gas plant if you take the time to look into it.
