Future Roland Cloud offer for existing Roland Store customer

Post by mangepange »

The FAQ has had this info about compensating existing Roland Contents Store customers for a long time now. When will it be reality?

I have already purchased a PLUG-OUT Synth from the Roland Contents Store- what does the change to a subscription service under Roland Cloud mean for me?

First, thank you for being a Roland fan and customer- we want to make you happy! You may continue to use your current synth(s) license(s) without interruption (and if you choose to do this, please do not install the Roland Cloud versions of any synths you own- a different copy protection system will create some challenges!). In the very near future we will be announcing a special Roland Cloud offer for existing Roland Contents Store customers- please stay tuned!

Well, one obvious benefit with the Cloud version is that they get updated with new features (such as the beautiful high res interface that was deployed earlier this year), while the standalone versions never will.

Hopefully they will also keep updating the Roland store versions. As the faq above says "please do not install the Roland Cloud versions of any synths you own- a different copy protection system will create some challenges!".

No they won't. I asked specifically and was given the reply that it is a different code branch that has been abandoned together with the Roland Store. TBH, nothing strange about that, software companies generally avoid having to maintain two similar but not quite the same software versions, and usually cut one of the branches off. The only reason Roland still needs to keep the store version is a legal one and they will do whatever they can to make people turn to the cloud version instead. I would be surprised if Virtual Sonic has even one FTE runtime staff member assigned to the store any more for support cases and such.

Well then the future offer for existing Roland Store customers seems more logical.

Why not give an extra instrument after the first 12 months for each instrument you bought at the Roland Store? Hey, it's Christmas after all. :-)

Six more months has passed, no more info. Current FAQ:

Now the the text in the faq is:
Q. I have already purchased a PLUG-OUT Synth from the Roland Contents Store- what does the change to a subscription service under Roland Cloud mean for me?
A. You may continue to use your current synth(s) license(s) without interruption (and if you choose to do this, please do not install the Roland Cloud versions of any synths you own- a different copy protection system will create some challenges.)
So I mailed the support and they replied:
We're currently working on a plan to migrate the Content Store plug-ins to Roland Cloud, which should be available late this year. Stay tuned!

That sounds good!
And if the initial claim "special offer for Roland Conents Store customers" means something extra.. Then it would be great! :-)
