Anthology 1993 released...but what synth is it?

Post by iixorb »

Hi,

Just had an email from Roland confirming that "Anthology 1993" has been released (and they're up to v5.0 now)

https://www.rolandcloud.com/catalog/ant ... ology-1993

But I am at a loss as to what synth it represents...

Roland mention: "..When the inspiration for Anthology 1993 was released over 25 years ago, it was hailed as 'the best synth ever produced by Roland" and "the best PCM synth ever made by anyone" by musicians worldwide.."

So what was it then? ! I don't recall any ground breakers from that era :-) The JD800 was released in '91 and the JP8000 in '96.... what came in 1993 that was regarded so highly?

I checked Roland's synth chronicle below.. but still can't figure it out !!

Cheers.

I first thought it was just a spinoff from the Legendary series JV-1080, but it is more likely to be samples from the JD-800.

Now, a real, editable model of the JD-800 in the Legendary series would be truly awesome!

It's the JD-990, which is an enhanced rack version of the JD-800

Thanks - 1993 would indeed be the right date for it to be the JD990. I don't recall people raving about it at the time though - although I was mid university and had taken my eye off the synth world at that time.

Not sure why Roland don't name the actual synths they're mimicking in the Anthology Series - surely they have the right to?!

I think it's because anthology is based on a timeline of classic roland instruments that has been sampled, rather than accurate synth modelling which they use in their Legendary collection - where the synths are titled correctly.

Whether that would get confusing if they both had similar names, i don't know! :)

It's the JD-990, no doubt.

"Vol1" is the Internal bank.
"Vol2" is the Preset A bank.
"Vol3" is the Preset B bank.

And it's darn close! I was playing it against my JD-990 and was sometimes changing settings on the "wrong" unit and wondered why. That's how well they've sampled it.
