USB Midi latency

I am experiencing severe latency when using a controller keyboard via USB cable to control my XM (version 1.30 software)

using a 5-pin din cable at both ends is fine, it's just USB midi.

The latency is sometimes half a second, sometimes its okay but the second note doesn't retrigger. I have tried two different controller keyboards with the same result; I suspect it may be the latest Roland software as they changed the Remote Keyboard options. I set the Midi System setting to USB Mem as it goes in through that.

Anyone else have the same issue? I hope it's not a faulty XM..
