USB Midi Driver not working OSX 10.14

Post by maten149 »

I've installed the 10.14 driver, configured the XM to "Vendor" mode.

Audio interface is working, but MIDI device does not appear (not registering).

Have tried uninstalling, reinstalling drivers.

The driver is of course not blocked, since the audio interface part is working perfectly.
(And yes, I checked the "blocked software" list, it is not there)

I can reconfigure the XM and use the "Generic" USB driver setting, then the midi works, but of course, no audio.

Anyone has any ideas how this can be remedied?

Well, unfortunately I have the same with my Jupiter X as well as my Fantom 7. I had them working briefly on a different computer (same OS, same driver versions), but unfortunately, after a reboot, that went down the drain. Stopped working, both machines. Some have managed to make it work by removing the drivers, rebooting, installing without anything connected, rebooting again, then booting the JX/F7, wait until rebooted, switch the driver type in the machines to Vendor, save the changes, reboot JX/F7, and only after they have booted, connect them to your Mac. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to clear the clog with that.

I wonder if there's something really badly wrong with the drivers...? (a heavily rhetorical question; there is, really badly wrong)

Same here, on MacOS 10.14 when on VENDOR, USB audio seems to be working but no mid through USB while when on GENERIC mode, Midi seems to work but no audio anymore...

Or we are missing something (maybe this is by design ?) or Roland might have screwed up on the driver but this is pretty annoying. (My 10y old Virus TI hasn't got that issue)

The USB drivers have worked well in both 10.14 and 10.15 for many users. Did you follow all the steps to in the readme file to complete the driver configuration in Audio Midi setup?

You mean like...the steps below which I did already twice step by step by the book...even after Factory Reset of the Jupiter X..same result.

When set to Vendor -> Detected as Audio device but not online in Midi Studio
When set to Generic -> Detected online in Midi Studio but not available as Audio device.

All USB ports tried, no hub, nothing else (not even Keyboard/Mouse), it's a no go for the moment to get Midi and Audio working at the same time... I can imagine I'm not the only one having this issue ?

About the items in the Driver Settings Panel

"SAMPLE RATE"
Displays the present sample rate.

"Audio Buffer Size"
You can adjust the audio input/output buffer size.
Decreasing the buffer size will shorten the latency and improve realtime performance, but might make it more likely that you will experience audio clicks and pops, depending on your computer's processing power and the song data load.
Increasing the buffer size will lengthen the latency, but will make audio streaming more stable, and it will be less likely for audio clicks and pops to occur.
In general, you'll probably want to decrease the buffer size for better realtime performance if you're playing a software synthesizer in real time, or if you're monitoring an audio input that's being passed through your DAW software.
Conversely, you can increase the buffer size to prevent audio clicks and pops if you're recording or playing back song data that contains numerous tracks and presents a heavy processing load.
By changing the buffer size as appropriate for your situation, you can obtain the right balance between realtime performance and audio streaming stability.

"Recording Margin"
If the recorded audio data contains sound dropouts or noise even after you've adjusted the audio buffer size in your software and also adjusted the above "Audio Buffer Size," try increasing this "Recording Margin" setting.
* For some software, it may not be possible to adjust the buffer size.

"Recording Timing"
If the timing of the recorded audio data is not correct, adjust this value.

Note)
If you click the [Apply] while your audio software is running, the setting changes won't be immediately reflected. Only after all audio software have been quit, and the software is then started once again will the settings become effective.
To uninstall

Start computer with all USB cables disconnected.
(except the keyboard and mouse)
Double-click "Uninstaller."
The display will indicate "This uninstalls JUPITER-X driver from this Mac."; click [Uninstall].
* If any other message appears, proceed as directed by that message.
The display will indicate "Are you sure you want to uninstall the driver?"; click [OK].
A dialog box will ask you for a password; enter your password and click [OK].
The display will indicate "Uninstallation is completed."; click [Restart]. Your computer will then restart.
* It may take some time for restarting the computer.
Troubleshooting

Cannot install/uninstall the driver

Follow the procedure described below to start the installer/uninstaller.
Hold down the Control key and click the installer/uninstaller icon.
On the menu that appears, select "Open."
When you are prompted to confirm that you want to start the application, click "Open."
Check the security settings.
In "System Preferences," click "Security & Privacy."
Click the lock icon on the bottom left. When a dialog box requesting a password appears, enter the administrator's password to unlock.
On the General tab, change the "Allow apps downloaded from"/"Allow applications downloaded from" setting to "App Store and identified developers."
* When you finish installing or uninstalling the driver, change the setting back to the original setting using the same procedure.
JUPITER-X/Xm cannot be used or recognized

Check the security settings to see if the loading of the driver is blocked
After installation, permission must be given for the driver to load.If this permission is not given, the computer will not recognize the unit when it is connected.
In "System Preferences," click "Security & Privacy."
Open the General tab and check if any message indicating the loading of the system software being blocked is displayed.
If displayed, confirm that the publisher is "Roland Corporation" and click "Allow".
If asked to restart, click [Restart] to restart the computer.
* If the loading of system software of multiple publishers is blocked, click "Allow" to display a list of developers. Select "Roland Corporation" and then click [OK].
If a message does not appear, follow the procedure in "To uninstall" to uninstall the driver, and refer to "Installation" to reinstall the driver.
* No message will be displayed in the following cases (driver loading is allowed):
When reinstalling a driver that was allowed previously.
When updating from macOS on which the same driver had been previously installed.

Is the JUPITER-X/Xm's SYSTEM - USB Driver set to "VENDOR"?
Be sure to set the JUPITER-X/Xm's SYSTEM - USB Driver to "VENDOR."

Did the computer enter a Sleep mode while the JUPITER-X/Xm was connected with its power turned on?
If the computer entered a Sleep mode while the JUPITER-X/Xm was connected with its power turned on, it may not operate correctly. In this case, after resuming, exit all software that are using the JUPITER-X/Xm, and then turn on the power of the JUPITER-X/Xm once again.

If you start or restart Mac while JUPITER-X/Xm is still connected to Mac, the driver may not be loaded properly and you may not be able to use JUPITER-X/Xm.
In such a case, disconnect JUPITER-X/Xm and connect it to another USB port or turn on the power of JUPITER-X/Xm after Mac starts up.

No sound is heard; cannot playback or record

After installation, permission must be given for the driver to load.If this permission is not given, the computer will not recognize the unit when it is connected.

Could you have entered Sleep mode during playback or recording?
If you entered Sleep mode during playback or recording, it will no longer be possible to play back or record from the JUPITER-X/Xm. Exit all currently playing or recording software, and switch the power of the JUPITER-X/Xm off, then back on again.

Try adjusting the audio buffer size of the driver
If the size of the driver's audio buffer is too small, sound may not be produced, or it may be impossible to carry out normal playback and recording.
In such cases, you should refer to "To change or verify settings," and increase the size of the buffer.

Occasional disruptions in the sound or noises occur

Try adjusting the audio buffer size for the software you're using.
First, try adjusting the audio buffer size for the software you're using.
If sound dropouts or noise still occur during playback or recording, try adjusting the "Audio Buffer Size" in the Driver Settings panel.
* For some software, it may not be possible to adjust the buffer size.

Could you have performed a macOS software update while the device was still connected?
If you performed the macOS software update with the device left connected, drop-outs may occur in the sound. If this occurs, please re-install the driver.

Is the JUPITER-X/Xm connected to a USB hub?
Try connecting the JUPITER-X/Xm directly to the USB connector of your computer itself.

Occasional disruptions in the sound or noises are in the recorded audio data

If the recorded audio still contains sound dropouts or noise even after you've adjusted the audio buffer size as described in "Occasional disruptions in the sound or noises occur" (above), try increasing the "Recording Margin" in the Driver Settings panel.
* For some software, it may not be possible to adjust the buffer size.

I was more thinking about this part of the sequence:

What is shown in the Audio Devices and the Midi Studio windows of Audio Midi Setup?

This does seem to be limited, as many of us used 10.14 successfully for a while before upgrading, so there is prolly something unique in your setup.

Let me first wish you a very nice 2021 and allow me to say that I appreciate the fact you try to help me out here.

Unfortunately step 4 from the Readme.htm Settings for Midi input and output on macOS (which appears to be different from the readme within the subfolder 'Readme', is where it goes wrong.

When in Vendor mode on the JPX it stays greyed out whereas when in Generic mode it becomes available.
I will later check with a Windows machine if I get the same results.

Of course it can be something particular in my Mac's config but as the initial poster of this topic, it seems to be exactly the same behaviour.

Hopefully I can get it fixed.

Cheers

Have you tried a complete reset of the board? Sometimes clears up weird behavior.

1. complete backup to usb
2. reload the latest software (1.30)
3. factory reset
4. reload your backup from step 1

Hi DesertBoat,

Just tried it and still the same. In windows everything is running fine...

I also tried to install the version for MacOS 10.13 (as they state it should be possible) but there MacOS won't let me install it as it says this version is not supported...

So I'm stuck for the moment.

I think it is time for a Roland Backstage trouble report. Ensure you include as much info as you can about your setup. Software versions, etc.

Re: USB Midi Driver not working OSX 10.14

Yeah I think you're right, it's quite a setup to search every USB installed driver version from other equipment which might be causing the issue. I already see the versions are not always available in the system report...

- Presonus StudioLive 32 Series III
- MOTU 828 MK3 (USB/FireWire)
- Access Virus TI Keyboard
- Waldorf Blofeld
- Korg KingKorg
- NI Machine Studio
- NI Komplete Kontrol S61
- Roland Fa06

Let's hope Roland is willing to invest time to figure out what is not working without me needing to completely factory restore my MAC pro's (Late 2013) configuration which I don't want to update to Catalina or Big Sur as it will completely break the Access Virus TI Total Control's functionalities. ( I know Access is lacking support here..)

Maybe I need to create an image/backup from my actual setup and then try the MacOS upgrade to see if that would work and then at least be able to go back to my working setup with 10.14

I bought a Mac as it was supposed to be more stable and have less issues but after all when I see all the current problems...I'm again more busy debugging why things do not work instead of making music which is quite disappointing.

Hi all,

Just to let you know that the issue was caused by the driver from another midi interface (midiman midisport 2x2). After removing it and its driver all is fine.

Have fun with your Jup-x(m)'s all !
