Recording automation

I’m a relative newbie so forgive a stupid question.

I have a System-1. All the knobs and sliders can have their automation recorded by Ableton. I also have an Xm. It seems that only whatever is assigned to the 2 sliders and 3 (pointless to me unless I don’t get it) buttons can be recorded.

That sounds like either a massive oversight or I’m being really stupid. Surely you can automate filter sweeps etc?
