Have a look at MV8800WS11 - Working with External MIDI Instruments. See page 5

ftp://ftp.roland.co.uk/ProductSupport/M ... uments.pdf

says:-
Press the SYSTEM button to display the SYSTEM menu.
Select MIDI to open the MIDI window.
Make sure Multi Timbre Sampler Mode is set to Off as shown above. This accomplishes two things. With this parameter off:
The MV-8800’s pads and a MIDI keyboard connected to theMV-8800’s MIDI IN jack play the MIDI sound controlled by the currently selected sequencer track.
As you play a MIDI instrument from the MV-8800’s pads or a connected MIDI keyboard, you can also record your playing into the MV-8800’s sequencer.

I think perhaps you may not understand exactly what midi is and what it is doing?

Have a look at http://www.musiconmypc.co.uk/art_midi.php which is a quick introduction to midi.

However, the MV is a sampler so you can if you want sample the sounds that your Yamaha makes into the MV itself and play them on the MV in that way either directly or with your keyboard.

This is a guide on how to do that here…
